We have all seen online the latest cleaning hacks, or new amazing product and equipment that will revolutionise carpet cleaning and stain removal. While it may be tempting to grab a bottle of carpet cleaner from the supermarket or hire a carpet machine, to save a few pounds, we strongly advise against it.
Different Carpet Types
Natural and synthetic carpets are completely different in structure and therefore need different treatments and cleaning methods. To avoid causing damage to your carpets, professional carpet cleaners will correctly identify the fibres used in your carpets by undertaking a strand test. This will allow them to select the correct cleaning solution and method that is most appropriate for the job.
Most carpets today are synthetic, made of nylon or polyester, so professionals tend to avoid solutions with a PH higher than 10, as these can cause damage to the fibres. Not all damage is immediately apparent when the PH used is incorrect but it is important that your carpet cleaner knows the difference in PH levels and how to properly manage them during carpet cleaning.
Wool carpets are more delicate than synthetic carpets and require neutralising after using cleaning chemicals. Many carpet cleaning products are alkaline with a ph of around 11, with wool needing to be neutralised to ph 7.
PSI & Motor Power
The machines that are commonly available at supermarkets throughout the UK are no where near as powerful as professional machines. Common store hired carpet cleaners have a small motor, letting out around 1200 watts and a psi of around 50, which usually cannot be adjusted. Professional machines have much larger motors and the water pressure can be adjusted.
Vacuum Power
The vacuums are also a lot smaller which makes them unable to clean anywhere near as well as a professional carpet cleaning machine.
Our technicians use an Airflex Storm, which is a portable machine with the power of a truck mount. It has 2 x 6.6 vac motors that is almost double the power of 2 x 3-stage standard motors used on most professional carpet cleaning machines. The vacuum in our machine make soil extraction more efficient and drying times are massively reduced.
Drying Times Reduced
The main issue with hired carpet cleaning machines is that they over saturate the carpet, which is not good for any carpet, especially wool. It is usually impossible to control the water pressure on hired machines and too much water is released. The vacuums on these machines are not powerful enough to pull out the majority or the water so your carpets become oversaturated.
When carpets are oversaturated with water they will not dry completely and leave a musky odour. On rare occasions the water seeps through to the underlay and even floor boards.
Rectifying Issues
We have had to save many customers from hired and store brought carpet cleaning machines. You can view our most recent at.... https://www.facebook.com/1129687022/posts/10225628959247346/
When it comes to correcting these issues, it costs a lot more than it would to have your carpets professionally cleaned in the first place. We have to make sure the area is completely dry before we start our work peeling back the carpets. This process can take multiple visits, depending on the severity. Where a professional carpet clean with MB Complete Cleaning would set you back £35.00 a room, fixing these issues can lead into the hundreds.

The products available to buy are not intended for regular use. Over time they will damage your carpets and effect the air quality of your home. Store brought cleaners are usually applied, without being properly extracted and can be spread throughout different areas of your home and over time attract more dirt.
It may be also be tempting to hire a carpet cleaning machine and save yourself a few pounds. We strongly advised against this, and not just because it may benefit us. Here are a few reasons why a professional carpet clean is better than a DIY job.
